Introducing the theme of his next book, Daniel Gordis presents his thesis that Israeli is the guarantor of the ethnic nation-state, and the nation-state, in turn, is the guarantor of human diversity and heterogeneity, and therefore, of human freedom. He traces all of this to a close reading of the Tower of Babel story, showing the continuing of ideas from the Hebrew Bible, to Zionism to the enduring human quest for freedom.
