About Gilad Shalit: it is not, 'What if he were Avi?'. It's that he is Avi and he's you and he's me too. He wasn't taken because he is Gilad but because he is one of us. He is hostage for all of us and we are letting ourselves down if we don't do our utmost to get him back. Hamas didn't take him only for the ransom value - they don't care about the ransom. They took him to hurt us because it's the only way they really can hurt us, emotionally, through what they perhaps see as our weak spot and I see as our strength: that we ultimately do care.
